Sam Vokes will have a scan on his injured hamstring later today.
The on-loan Wolves forward played just 13 minutes on his City debut in the 3-0 home defeat to Millwall before suffering the injury.
The Wales international told medics he was still in a lot of pain this morning and a scan is expected to determine the length of time he will be absent.
Manager Steve Coppell said: "Sam needs to go and have a scan today. He's still very sore and will be out for a while, but we don't know how long yet.
"If he's going to be missing for some time then it's likely he'll go back to Wolves to receive treatment. If it's not so bad then he'll probably remain here."
He added: "Strikers don't just grow on trees and you can't just go out the next day and get another.
"We were looking for strikers anyway, no matter what happened with Sam, so that remains the same now. We want to strengthen the squad as best as possible with the resources available."
