MASSIVE CHALLENGE - STEVE

Posted on: Fri 06 Aug 2010

Steve Coppell is warning his City players not to be off their guard against newly-promoted Millwall at Ashton Gate tomorrow (3pm).

The City manager is well aware the Lions will be on a high following their play-off final success at League One level back in May.

And speaking on Player ahead of the season opener, Steve said: "It's a celebration for Millwall to be back in the Championship.

"They've had two terrific seasons and have worked ever so hard to be where they are now. They aren't going to want to fritter away that hard work, they'll come here all guns blazing.

"Millwall have a dynamic style, they'll give one hundred per cent for their supporters and it's going to be a vociferous atmosphere.

"It's a massive challenge for us on the opening day of the season. We won't have a bedding period, if we're not playing at the same intensity as Millwall then we're going to suffer.

"We must be right on our game from the first whistle."

Steve says the game can't come around quick enough for himself and the players.

"The five-and-a-half weeks of pre-season seems to have dragged on and it's been a testing period," added the manager.

"We've played one game too many and I've experienced more injuries in this pre-season then I ever have before, so it's a challenge."

Lewin Nyatanga (knee), Nicky Hunt (ankle), Louis Carey (heel), Kalifa Cisse (thigh), Danny Haynes (groin), Nicky Maynard (knee), James Wilson (knee) and Christian Ribeiro (back) are all injured.

The manager says he will select his team after assessing a couple of knocks. He also admits young Joe Edwards is an option at right-back, but wouldn't discuss potential formations.

Tickets are still on general sale for Saturday's fixture and are available in person at Ashton Gate until 5pm; by phone (0871 222 66 66 - option 1) until 8.30pm or online 24/7.
