David James is determined to help City win promotion to the Premier League - insisting: "A top-flight team from the South West is overdue."
The England international goalkeeper today shocked the football world by signing for City in a one-year deal, with an option for a second 12 months.
Speaking in a World Exclusive interview on Bristol City Player, David explained his reasonings for making the big call to join Championship City.
He told Player: "I've had offers to stay in the Premier League but it is more important that I play football - which I love - for the right club and be a family man.
"It's for the family initially. I recently got married and I'm living down in Devon.
"I've played against Bristol City a few times, namely in the FA Cup a couple of years ago. The area I'm not terribly familiar with but I've been around a number of times and it's a wonderful city.
"I had a long conversation with the chairman Steve Lansdown yesterday and I liked what he said about the club and his ambition. I know all about the plans for a new stadium and desire to win promotion to the Premier League."

He continued: "The club is ambitious and that's what I am. The South West has not had a club in the Premier League and that needs to change.
"It's not about money; I've had better offers financially elsewhere. It's about doing what I need to do as an individual and a player. I wanted a home environment and other options wouldn't satisfy that.
"This is a club that wants to go places and has the financial backing and a nice sense of security which has been lacking at other football clubs recently.
"The club is ambitious and that's what I am. The South West has not had a club in the Premier League and that needs to change."

"Providing form and fitness, and as long as the manager still wants me, there is the potential for a long-lasting career here. It's not a quick gig or me looking to see out my football career. There's potential for success here and that would be winning promotion."
Around a month ago David was keeping goal for England in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
With 53 caps to his name already, David aims to add to that tally during his time at Ashton Gate.
David said: "I don't know what the future holds, and it was the same before the World Cup to be honest.
"I enjoyed the World Cup to an extent but obviously the results and the outcome were disappointing. I'll never retire from England and hopefully my performances at Bristol City will keep me on the radar."
