WE WERE SECOND BEST - GARY

Posted on: Sat 13 Mar 2010

Gary Johnson was honest enough to admit his City side had been "second best" in their 2-0 defeat at in-form Reading.

A first-half brace from Gylfi Sigurdsson helped the Royals to a seventh league victory in eight against a below-par City side at the Madejski Stadium.

The City manager said on Player: "We were second best from the first 20 minutes to the last 20 minutes.

"We can't hide away from that fact. We stemmed the flow a little bit at 2-0 down but never looked like doing enough in front of goal to win the game.

"Jamal Campbell-Ryce's chance when he went through with 30 minutes left was our only real clear-cut chance and that may have changed the flow of the game, but in truth we never did enough to warrant winning today.

"We never really dealt with Sigurdsson operating in the hole. He didn't need to worry about tracking back because it was breaking down so often. If we had been doing our job then we might have had Reading asking him to back-track.

"We were second best from the first 20 minutes to the last 20 minutes."

"We played very well on Tuesday at Crystal Palace and we came here today and looked second best. We're not going to win every game but we need to do better in defeat. People need to go away feeling we gave it a go.

"That's not the players not trying to win. Just like us demoralising Palace in the week, Reading - an in-form team - demoralised us today."

Chris Iwelumo and Nicky Maynard made way at half-time for John Akinde and Danny Haynes.

Gary revealed: "The changes at half-time were tactical. I thought we had to try and go in behind them a bit more rather than play it straight up top. We had a static centre forward in Chris because it was all too short.

"We wanted the two lads to get in behind and feed the ball down the channels. Liam Fontaine did have a leg injury and did well to survive as long as he did but in the end we had to bring Jamie (McAllister) on in his place."

Gary will speak with Wolves boss Mick McCarthy over the weekend with regards to Iwelumo's future.
