FANTASTIC STINT FROM THE TEAM - GARY

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

Gary Johnson was delighted with the performance of his players as they secured a much-needed 1-0 away win at Crystal Palace.

Chris Iwelumo's 73rd minute volley was all that separated the two sides on the scoresheet, but City's manager heaped praise on his players for their dominance all over the pitch - labelling them "heroes".

He told Player: "It's always big when you win a game of football but we needed it tonight for our supporters, for our players, chairman and club.

"It's three points and there's more to come. It was how we did it tonight that makes me happy; we did it with so much energy, spirit and concentration.

"We demoralised their team, crowd and management. The players put in a fantastic stint and that's what you've got to do at this level.

"We kept them quiet right from the start and we had some real heroes out there for us.

"We didn't come here to get a nil-nil. It was a good away performance and we didn't nick it."

Of Chris' match-winning volley, Gary revealed: "I told Chris 'we're going to take you off in a minute, so give us one last bit of magic'. He volleys a superb goal and turns to me to say: 'will that do?'.

"It was a great strike. He had a couple of volleys before that and we saw a few other chances blocked.

"The way we saw the game out was also professional, keeping hold of the ball in their half.

"I think Mick McCarthy (Wolves manager) was here to watch tonight. We hope to keep hold of Chris for another month but we'll have to wait and see."
