RESPECT BUT NO FEAR - GARY

Posted on: Sat 20 Feb 2010

Gary Johnson says his players should respect West Brom but not fear them at Ashton Gate tomorrow (2pm, live on BBC).

The City boss says confidence is better in the camp following the midweek 1-1 draw with Leicester City at Ashton Gate.

And now he readies his charges to tackle high-flying West Brom at home in front of the live BBC cameras.

Gary told Player: "I think the confidence is higher because of the level of performance and football was the one we wanted in the second half against Leicester.

"It's certainly a base to start from as we tried to work higher up the pitch. Of course we're still a bit down after the late goal and we can't ignore that.

"We can go into the West Brom game knowing we partially got our game back (versus Leicester) and the crowd were magnificent on the night.

"We can't turn up tomorrow and be worried by West Brom. We have to respect them because they're on a good run.

"They have players with experience of the top flight and to be honest they are a Premier League team in waiting because they are still paying the sort of money they would in the top league.

"However, it should be a spur to our team and it will teach us a lot about ourselves as to whether we can handle a Premier League team here at Ashton Gate."

Gary added: "I think it will be West Brom and Newcastle that go up automatically from this division. They would be unlucky not go finish in the top two spots because they are the best two teams.

"Having said that, someone's got to beat them and if we do it then it would be a great scalp for us. A win would also take us into mid-table, which is where we would have been if we had beaten Leicester 1-0."

Evander Sno (back), Jamal Campbell-Ryce (calf) and Jamie McAllister (calf) all remain out of action and the manager is unable to give an accurate return date at present.

Cole Skuse should be okay after injuring his arm against Leicester, and Nicky Maynard has declared himself fully fit now following a dead leg injury.
