EVERYONE SHOULD BE PROUD - GARY

Posted on: Sun 21 Feb 2010

Gary Johnson says everyone at the club should feel proud after watching his side beat Championship promotion favourites West Brom at Ashton Gate.

A scintillating second half display saw the hosts overcome an early deficit to win 2-1 through goals from Chris Iwelumo and Lee Johnson.

And Gary told Player afterwards: "I think it was our best performance of the season and it was an important one with the watching worldwide television audience.

"Our supporters saw the second half display we put in against Leicester and we had to show them we could build on it a couple of days later.

"The supporters were right behind us and the players produced a really committed, in-your-face performance.

"In the first half it was matter of working out responsibilities between the two sets of players. (Graham) Dorrans is a clever player and doesn't always retreat so he's dangerous if you lose possession in your own half.

"We gave the ball away and that's exactly how the opener panned ou with Dorrans breaking away to score. Having said that I think we recovered very well and got on the ball to have a couple of half chances.

"We were right up for it again in the second half and right through to the 96th minute we put them under pressure and created chances and looked dangerous.

"We knew it was a big game and they don't come any bigger in this league than facing West Brom, one of the favourites. We've shown what we can do against the top sides and I thought we saw out the last few minutes very well.

"We've done our reputation good and everyone involved with the club should be proud."

Gary reserved special praise for Danny Haynes, who tore West Brom's defence apart, especially left-back Joe Mattock, to earn the man of the match award.

He said: "It was touch and go whether we went with Danny again today or not because Ivan Sproule did very well when he came on against Leicester in the week.

"We went with the same team in the end because we've done a lot of work with that side and shape.

"Danny played very well against the lad (Mattock) and I'm sure he's not had too many tougher opponents even in the Premier League.

"It was a slit your wrists moment for him when we took Danny off and replaced him with the pace of Ivan Sproule! They are two great assets for us."
