IVAN'S SENTIMENTAL STRIKE

Posted on: Wed 09 Dec 2009

Ivan Sproule dedicated his wonder-goal in the 3-1 win at Leicester to his "wee girl" who sadly lost her life at birth last month.

The winger suffered personal tragedy and has only recently returned to the first team fold following compassionate leave.

However, he returned with a bang in his first start since September at Leicester last night, waltzing his way past four defenders to net a stunning opener and set City on their way to victory.

Speaking on Player after the game, Ivan said: "It was a special goal.

"Everyone knows that myself and my wife have had our troubles over the past couple of weeks and it's been hard getting my head around playing football again.

"My wee girl is always in my thoughts, even when I'm on the pitch. I said that my first goal on coming back would be dedicated to her and it was a special moment.

"I've scored some good goals [in my career] but goals that mean something special to you are just that, extra special.

"You score to claim three points or to win cup finals, but there was sentiment in that goal.

"It's something I'm glad I've done. The club have been fantastic to me and so have the fans. It's a thank you for how they've helped me and my wife through this."

The Northern Irishman is now looking to kick on and claim a regular starting role.

"It's up to me to grab my chance," he said. "I've had to wait a long time and I've been very frustated, but I'm not somebody who throws the rattle out of the pram.

"I've knuckled down and trained hard. The gaffer's told everyone in the squad they will get their games.

"If I can keep putting performances in like that then hopefully he can't keep me out of the team."
