STAKEHOLDERS MEETING BLOG IN FULL
The club hosted a stakeholders meeting at Ashton Gate tonight, with chairman Steve Lansdown, manager Gary Johnson and chief executive Colin Sexstone in attendance.
Information from the meeting was kept fully update throughout, including details of the question-and-answer session. See the full blog below.
By Adam Baker
8.55pm - And we're done. Now for some interviews. Check out Player soon for interviews with Gary and Steve. Thank you and goodnight.
8.51pm - Steve wraps it up. "I've always quoted Bristol as being the 80 per centers. We've had some good players in the past when I first became chairman. Danny Coles, for instance, but what happened is we started doing well and patting people on the back. The players thought they were the bee's knees. We had big-time charlies. You can't stay at 80 per cent. You have to work hard, to go for 100 per cent. I see it from the fans and in the dressing room. We've turned into 100 per centers. We want to win, we see what went before and associate it now to what happened then. It's not the same. I know they want to win. They want to be in the Premier League and be number one. I want that, Gary wants that. Bristol didn't deserve a Premier League side. If they allow this stadium to happen, they will deserve a Premier League team in Bristol. Hopefully they'll get that. But we have to be ruthless and make sure it happens. Working hard together, that's the key to it.
8.49pm - A query about the West Country and its easy life. There's no will to win, or ruthlessness in the city. We still lack it, says the supporter. Gary says: "Thirty years ago in the top flight with a lot of local lads and British lads. But the club has done very well over the last few years. We've got a win ratio of about 40 per cent, Roy Keane's at Ipswich is 15 per cent. We have a group that wants to win football matches. We got promoted from League One, reached the Championship play-off final, then finished tenth last year. The club has been very successful and we want to keep that going for you."
8.47pm - A comment about Bradley's commentary on Radio Bristol, which is great, although he mentioned "too many players playing out of position". That's why he annoys* you," Gary jokes. "He just wants his place back!" *Words to that effect again.
8.44pm - How many leaders do we have? Especially in the midfield without Paul Hartley, same with the defence without Louis Carey. Gary says: "It's a good point and a valid one. Our discussions this morning were about leaders. When we go a goal down we lose our leaders. If we go a goal up we have 11 leaders. We have an inexperienced team in Championship terms and I was disappointed with our defenders on Saturday who couldn't sort ourselves out quicker. There's leadership by example, then there's leadership where others don't want to mess with you - like Chirs Morgan at Sheffield United. We don't have that sort of leader so we have to get our lads to think about that. It's about giving information strongly and get others to accept it." He adds: "Bradley Orr is great when we're winning and inspires everyone, but if we're losing then he annoys everyone!" Or words to that effect.
8.43pm - We're starting to wind up now!
8.41pm - One fan asks about the program given to players for fitness and ability. "It's often gym work for the likes of pace and endurance. We put heart-rate belts on the players in training, which shows us who has been trying. It's very scientific."
8.38pm - Someone believes our midfield and defence lacks speed. Gary says: "That's a question you get asked when you lose 4-1. When we were fifth last week, we were better than 19 other teams. If you want everything, then you're looking at Rooney, Giggs and Lampard. We look for as close as we can. If you find someone with pace, ability, skill, then we'll get them in, but everyone else is after that player. Supporters support and have their opinion. Sometimes those opinions are said in hindsight. It changes whether we win or lose. It's where the trust comes in." Steve adds: "I don't think we've been caught for pace very often."
8.37pm - On Stephen Henderson, Gary says: "He's still only 22, he's done well when he's needed to come in. He still needs to grow a little bit. For us to trust him in the Championship over a period of games that's what we need from him. We may need to send him out on loan. He gets frustrated as a young goalkeeper. Of course, Dean Gerken's only a little older than him, so we need the experience of Basso on the bench. Hendo's nearly ready but not quite yet. He's a very good goalkeeper and if we lose Basso in the summer he'll come through."
8.34pm - What's the situation with Adriano Basso and why is he on the bench. Gary says: "We've been as honest as possible with the situation. Basso wants to give everything he's got at this moment in time for the club but doesn't want to sign a new deal. He feels at his age this is his last opportunity to get a Premier League club move. He trains as hard as everyone else. We understand his sentiment. None of the other lads feel he's nicking a living or just seeing out his contract. We've tried hard to make sure he feels wanted. We still see him as a good goalkeeper. If the penny drops and he sees there's no interest then we'd have a very good goalkeeper. He's part of our squad and we need to use him. He's very strong in his views. If I put him in the team he'll give everything. Hopefully one morning he'll come in and ask to sign the contract but it hasn't happened yet."
8.33pm - A query about Ikea, which was previously Bristol Rovers' old stadium. When Ashton Gate is knocked down, will there be any tribute in Sainsbury's to the old stadium? - Colin says: "Tesco were planning to do something and I'm sure that will be the plan with Sainsbury."
8.30pm - Is David Clarkson fully fit and what's his best position. Gary says: "He's fully fit and his best position is just behind a main striker. He works hard and at the moment because of his illness, we're having to give him more training sessions because he's not a natural athlete. He has to be at this full fitness to show his best. He's a good finisher and we need to get him into the area for him to finish; the right ball at the right time. With all due respect to the SPL, there's only Rangers and Celtic that are strong opposition, so he's needed to find his Championship legs. The jury may be out on him amongst the supporters, but we feel he will get goals for us. Look at Nicky Maynard."
8.26pm - Someone asks if the West Brom DVD will be on sale? I hope not! Also a query whether the team should have travelled up on the day and eaten at the hotel next to the ground. Steve says: "I did have a worry about the preparations and there wasn't much of a build-up to the game. Now we've lost 4-1 I can say it wasn't a great thing to do." Gary says: "Thanks for giving us an excuse! We travel on the day because it's within two hours, have a meal quite close then had a meeting. We asked today: "Was there anything we could have done any better on the day?" and not one of them mentioned the preparation. It was just poor play on the day."
8.22pm - A question about transport into the stadium. Steve says: "When you look at the Ashton Vale project, you can use every mode of transport possible. You could fly in if they build a new dual carriageway, take the train in, hop on a bus or BRT if it goes ahead, you could take a ferry across the harbour and walk, then you've got the road transport with park and ride. That doesn't involve too much work. Parking and transport is an emotive issue, but it's there already. The big issue is the pedestrian way across the railway track but we can do it." Colin adds: "We have a solution but it just needs the Council's approval strangely enough."
8.20pm - Katherine Rawlings has asked about transfer and wingers. See 7.39pm answer earlier in this blog!
8.16pm - A question for all three about the Crystal Palace incident and whether it had a negative effect on the club's standing. Steve says: "No, everyone tells me we did the right thing. Gary's delighted the youth team has been drawn away to Palace in the Youth Cup. This is when football lets itself down. I've not seen anywhere yet the referee's report details. The FA should have made a statement and it would have been done and dusted. It couldn't have happened to a nicer team." Gary says: "I still maintain, and I can sleep at night, the word we received was infringement and nothing to do with the ball crossing the line. We wiped our brow and continued the game. We scored two that day, one was offside. Everyone forgets that. I also didn't like their chairman talking about retribution. It will be interesting when we go there. Neil turns into somebody different in the technical area. I was at a LMA dinner the other day. I bumped into George Burley the other day after he'd been sacked and he said 'you can keep your training ground after they'd trained there before the Wales result that got him sacked. Then I bumped into Neil Warnock with his wife and he was very nice. I think they (Palace) are probably a bit embarrassed by it all to be honest."
8.13pm - A query about Sainsbury's application. Colin says: "The application should go in by the end of January, and then it's up to the Council to get their committee together. The sheer volume of work that goes into it is huge. There are 100s of people out there ready to trip you up. We want to get it done by May, when the general election takes place. It has a good chance, better than Tesco would have done, but it won't be straightforward."
8.10pm - E-mail me your comments on what you've seen so far to adam.baker@bcfc.co.uk - but not questions - I can't ask them for you!
8.08pm - "Two years ago you showed us the new stadium dream. But has the cost changed since you first announced it? - Steve says: "We're looking at £92m project. £65m is quoted a lot but that's the construction costs. This stadium can be built. Let's sort it out." A nice round of applause.
8.03pm - "With the council turning down Southlands, how will that affect the new stadium and how will the project affect our finances?" - Steve says: "Southlands being turned down was a nuisance, lack of foresight and pretty stupid. It's not a show-stopper. We were getting to a point where we needed to know the Council were behind this, and I met with them the other day and feel very confident now. There's a proper timetable with milestones to hit. We also have Ashton Gate to deal with, replacing Tesco with Sainsbury, which was quite clever I thought. It's important to get the planning at Ashton Gate through. We're still on track for 2012/13. A new stadium will be a brand new dawn for this club."

8pm - A complaint from one fan who took his seven-year-old daughter to West Brom. "We had a great day but afterwards we were marched out of the stadium and round the houses for a long time back to our car in the rain. Do clubs do enough for away fans?" - Gary says: "That doesn't sound acceptable to me. I think we should ask them for a replay." Colin asks the fan to e-mail him personally.
7.56pm - No mention of Jordan Walker in the presentation, says Aaron Eamer on e-mail. He's still on our books but is still sidelined with a knee cruciate injury at present sadly.
7.55pm - More pictures from the Q & A.

7.56pm - A question about late goals. Gary says: "A lot of Championship are scored late on because the other team (that's losing) just goes for it. And these teams have the quality to put you under pressure. If you're 2-0 up then the opposition just see the game out. That's why a second goal is so crucial. It's no tactic of ours to try and hold a 1-0 lead. Sometimes the opposition pin you back by being bold, but we don't order the players to sit back and defend. Our goals at West Brom were big mistakes, but we haven't let in too many, too often."
7.53pm - Thanks to those who have e-mailed in so far, but I'm not actually able to ask questions tonight - that's reserved for those here. Sorry!
7.52pm - A question about substitutions at West Brom - Gary says: "We changed it at the end to try and get on the ball. I make changes that I think can change the game. I wanted the eleven players out there to try and get us out of the mess they'd got us in."
7.46pm - Two questions at once, whoops! First question, after saying the chairman is "absolutely fantastic", is to Gary: "What's the aspirations for this season?" - Gary says: "If I said consolidation I'd be out tomorrow! We're trying to improve all the time." On forums and phone-ins - Gary says: "You can't always speak in response to every comment. We have a bunch of people who work so hard to try and get the best for this football club. If there's someone who isn't doing it for each other, I move them out. Rumours and comments which grow and grow - and is wrong - don't do anything for this club. It's nice to have these types of events, and I always speak to people - that's when you get the real feel for how people are feeling." He grins: "Ambition is to get rid of the forums and radio phone-ins. No seriously, it's to push towards the Premier League. If we get any results from the next two home games then it will be thanks to the support we received at West Brom when 4-0 down. They were shouting ole for every pass, and we've spoken about how great that is in the camp."
7.44pm - "I sense Alvaro Saborio is taking time to adapt, have we yet to see the best from him?" - Gary says: "I think so. He's had to do lots of travelling for international duty and that's affected him. We see it in training and I think he did very well to start with, especially on his debut at Coventry. He's desperate to come back and play straight away. There's better to come and he has to get to the pace of the Championship. Even Evander Sno is feeling the pace of this division."
7.43pm - "Will you still do improvements at Ashton Gate, like the PA, prior to the move?" - Colin says: "We do spend lots of money at the stadium, including on the PA system (over £200k) recently. We've put new seats in the William Stand and of course we keep the pitch up to scratch."
7.39pm - "I supported you when Michael McIndoe left, but I'm baffled why we don't have any left-sided players who can play wide." - Gary says: "It's a good question and one we're trying to alleviate. At the time it was right for Michael McIndoe to move on and then the search was on to find another left-sided player who could affect the game. Michael did that at the start but not near the end of his time here. There aren't many players like that around, and we are aware of that situation. We also don't have cover for Jamie McAllister. We are extensively looking for the right left-sided player to give us balance." He adds: "Chelsea don't play with wide players and they don't do too bad. Back in the day there were more wide players around. A lot of teams play 4-3-3, rather than 4-4-2 which can leave you open. If we do find the right one we'll bring them in. It's not that I don't want to play wingers. The best wingers they don't want to let go anyway. I promise we're looking."
7.38pm - "Are you frustrated with the reserve league?" - Gary says: "It's been a problem for some time and we only get a good game once in a while, like the Southampton game the other night. Other times you have to play Salisbury or the likes, with all due respect. The best thing is the loan system and we have all our players out on loan watched, often by Dave Lee (development coach).
7.37pm - Some pics from earlier have just arrived with me.

7.34pm - "Are the expectations on the Academy too high?" - Gary says: "There's a big difference between League One and the Championship. Some of the lads would have had a few more opportunities if we were in League One. What we have to do is get them league games. We don't want to send them into non-league, we want them at as high a level as possible." He continues: "No one is more proud when we bring somebody through from the Academy." Steve says: "I think the expectation is too high and in the past we've talked the youngsters up too much. It's a long-term approach."
7.33pm - No one puts their hands up to start. Oh, now we have a taker.
7.31pm - Remember you can e-mail in to adam.baker@bcfc.co.uk. See the presentation in PDF form here. Also, view the DVD is on the Bristol City Player home page now.
7.30pm - Now for a quick break before the Q & A session.
7.28pm - "We have the ability to make Bristol City FC a Premier League side," says the chairman. "We have the ambition and the figures show that. Our aims are clear to see, a real strategy. We will Achieve."
7.26pm - Steve praises the team attributes, which he says are "stability, trust and team spirit".
7.25pm - On the stadium - "I do believe it will happen, we'll work to make it happen and when we do have it we'll have something to be proud of," says Steve. "I could have walked away about 60 times already and I thank Colin (Sexstone) for pulling me back. If you get the sport right then the city will prosper."
7.24pm - "Our profile is increasing," the chairman continues, referring to the new training ground, new stadium plans and World Cup bid in 2018.
7.22pm - Steve thanks the Supporters Trust for their help with the Ashton Gate Eight, the East End, the end of season awards and much more. "I think we shocked the Council when 5,000-plus people watched the new stadium meeting webcast," he says. Steve also thanks Richard Lane for his help with the new stadium petition.
7.20pm - "We're not doing this (spending) without knowing we have the money to do it," Steve says.
7.17pm - "We run a tight ship here," says Steve. He then shows the Bristol City Holdings accounts, with a breakdown of loss figures from each of the departments. £378k on the Academy, £2.1m on football, £1m on player trading, £644k on Ashton Gate, £688k on depreciation and £1.7m on the new stadium project. "I might have to speak about a similar loss next year because we're investing in a new stadium and the squad."
7.16pm - Turnover again, this time for Ashton Gate, which shows a gradual incline, from £2.7m to £3.8m in the last five years. Next year the figures will show a drop because of the lack of concert this summer - worth around £1m in turnover (not profit). "We work hard to sweat the Ashton Gate asset but we need a new stadium."
7.15pm - "If you want us to take you back to League One, we can cut the wage bill and change the strategy," says Steve. "Tell me if that's what you want." No one does in this room.
7.14pm - Turnover time, with a gradual climb to circa £7.5m in the Coca-Cola Championship. "This shows a need for the new stadium," says Steve. He now shows the Costs slide, which shows a steep climb for the last five seasons. "We pay good wages to compete," he adds.
7.13pm - Steve discusses the recruitment of development coach Dave Lee to look after the club's youngsters. "It's something myself and (fellow director) Keith Dawe have spoken about for a while and it's a strong step in the right direction."
7.12pm - "Some say the Academy's not producing, but it won't happen overnight," he adds. He lists Carey, Skuse, Wilson, Ribeiro, Artus, Plummer, Jackson, Kington and Edwards as the nine players in the first team squad currently.
7.11pm - The Academy. "We do support grassroots football and bringing youngsters through the system," says the chairman. Income for the Academy was £264,000, though £184,000 of that came from the FA, with a further £25,000 from City Academy. The club spends between £300,000 to £400,000 to compete - "we could spend more," adds Steve.
7.10pm - "I think it was a record loss of £6.5m but there's method to our madness," says Steve.
7.09pm - Not much use without the chairman's words, perhaps, but you can see the presentation in PDF format by clicking here. The video of the chairman's speech will be on Player at some point in the near future.
7.08pm - Now it's time for the Powerpoint presentation, which involves a breakdown of finances with regards to the club's £6.5m loss in the last financial year.
7.07pm - Premier Side, Premier Facilities, Premier City is how the DVD ends. Nice.
7.06pm - By the way, you can view the DVD presentation by logging on the Bristol City Player home page now. It's a free-to-view video.
7.05pm - The chairman kicks the night off with a DVD of images and footage, all played out to the tune 'Let's Work Together' by Canned Heat.
7.03pm - "We'll discuss the finances and the outlook, but first for a DVD," says Steve.
7.02pm - We're off almost on time. Steve begins the proceedings.
7pm - We're almost ready to begin. The top table of Steve, Gary and Colin will be taking their seats very soon.
6.55pm - If you fancy e-mailing in regarding anything you read on this blog, feel free to send them to adam.baker@bcfc.co.uk.
6.47pm - A small gathering of fans have already arrived and have taken the seats closest to the stage. Around 50-75 fans here so far.
