GARY RUES INTERNATIONAL BLOWS

Posted on: Tue 13 Oct 2009

Gary Johnson could be without four players for Saturday's home game with Peterborough United.

The City boss was frustrated to see Christian Ribeiro limp out of Wales Under-21s' 2-0 win over Bosnia on Saturday.

The defender suffered a groin injury - something City's own medical team had warned the Welsh FA about - and was replaced by fellow City defender James Wilson, currently on loan at Brentford.

Lewin Nyatanga completed 82 minutes for Wales in their 2-1 defeat in Finland on Saturday, and they now travel to Liechtenstein for their final 2010 World Cup qualifier tomorrow night.

The match is a dead rubber game with Wales already out of contention, but injuries mean Lewin is likely to be involved again.

Manager Gary told bcfc.co.uk: "We're disappointed with Christian's injury. I fully understand he wants to be involved with his country but he's had a few injuries in recent times, especially the cruciate knee one, so needs to take things slowly.

"With regards to Lewin, he's coming back from the viral infection and is now likely to play two games for Wales in a matter of days. There's also been quite a bit of travelling involved, and whether he's up to three games in a week, we'll have to wait and see."

Alvaro Saborio's continued international commitments with Costa Rica mean he is unlikely to be heavily involved against Peterborough this weekend.

The on-loan FC Sion forward bagged two goals and set-up another as Costa Rica thrashed Trinidad & Tobago 4-0 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They now face a crunch match with USA in the early hours of Thursday morning - with a win guaranteeing them a place at the World Cup finals in South Africa next year.

"It's great for Alvaro's confidence that he scored two and made one for his country," said Gary. "He's been threatening for us and certainly took his frustrations out on Trinidad.

"They've now got a great chance of reaching the World Cup finals and we wish him well for the USA match.

"From our perspective it's difficult for us to plan for his inclusion against Peterborough because the USA game takes place around 4am on Thursday morning. It will be Friday before we see him again and he'll have lost 16 hours due to travelling!

"We'll have to see how he is when he returns to Ashton Gate."

Liam Fontaine is definitely ruled out with ankle ligament damage and Gary added with a smile: "It's disappointing for us but it's come at just the right time for live appearances on the X Factor."
