CITY FAN PAUL MAKES HISTORY

Posted on: Mon 10 Aug 2009

Lifelong City fan Paul Watson has become the youngest international coach in football history by taking over the national side of remote Micronesian island Pohnpei.

Watson was appointed last week after travelling across the globe to meet Micronesian officials and at the age of 25 is two years younger than previous youngest coach Paul Crosbie, who took over the Turks & Caicos Islands at 27.

Paul, who is the brother of award-winning TV comedian Mark Watson, has a daunting task on his hands. Pohnpei, who are yet to achieve FIFA recogntion, have never won a match and are regarded as the weakest footballing nation on earth.

The world's third wettest climate and a staggering rate of obesity have hampered previous efforts to climb football's ladder with previous results including a 16-0 drubbing against Guam, but Watson believes he can turn Pohnpei's fortunes around.

"I've seen a lot of raw talent and with some hard work this team can surprise a few people," the former East Fulham player insisted. "The aim is to gain FIFA status and compete in World Cup qualification for 2014, it may be a few more years before we lift the Cup though..."
