GARY ON KEEPER SITUATION

Posted on: Mon 03 Aug 2009

Gary Johnson has dismissed rumours linking City with a move for Manchester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Speaking at the club's annual press day, the City boss said the club hope to complete a loan deal for a keeper in the next few days.

However, he said it would not be Schmeichel - son of ex-Manchester United stopper Peter - who has been linked to the club in numerous mediums over the past 24 hours.

"I don't know where these things emanate from," he told reporters. "I think one person tells another and then it becomes fact.

"Don't believe everything you hear from the man down the pub. Only believe it if I'm quoted or there's an interview on the club website."

He said: "We think we've got [a loan keeper] ready to come on board in the next day or two, unless something hits a snag.

"It's most likely Dean (Gerken) will play at Preston, and the loan keeper will face Brentford in the Carling Cup.

"After those two games it's up to the goalkeeper who gets the jersey against Crystal Palace to do well enough to keep it."

Stephen Henderson, who has penned a two-year contract extension at the club over the summer months, is due to resume light training from next week.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 stopper suffered a broken metatarsal during pre-season.

Adriano Basso remains on the transfer list at his own request. The club has still yet to receive any offers for the Brazilian.

Meanwhile, Gary confirmed Coventry City are the club in talks with Michael McIndoe, after City agreed a fee over the weekend. However, there is no further news at present.

Finally, City beat Yeovil Town in a practice match at the training ground today with goals from Gavin Williams, Ivan Sproule and Lee Trundle (penalty).
