CITY SNATCH LATE FRIENDLY WIN

Posted on: Mon 13 Jul 2009

Hereford United 1-2 Bristol City
Adam Baker reports from Edgar Street

City overcame League Two side Hereford United thanks to Tristan Plummer's last-gasp goal.

The visitors trailed to Lee Morris' first-half goal, but fought back after half-time through Cole Skuse's close-range strike.

Then, with time ticking away, Plummer latched on to Ashley Kington's through pass to give Gary Johnson's side the win.

City handed trials to Greek defender Grigos Papazacharias, 24, and 26-year-old midfielder Alexei Eremenko.

Eremenko and David Clarkson saw early chances go begging, but the best chance of the opening 15 minutes fell the home side's way.

Good play from Morris and Jacques Maghona left Marc Manga with a near open goal to aim at, but the midfielder miscued his attempt horribly wide.

Bradley Orr saw a chipped effort cleared from the line before Hereford snatched the opening goal on 29 minutes.

Marc Pugh's superb pass gave Morris room down the left and from an acute angle he beat Adriano Basso at his near post with a venomous finish.

Pugh almost doubled the hosts' advantage seconds later with an angled shot across the face of goal which flashed wide.

City were now sparked into life and Orr hit the inside of the far post with an audacious lob from the bye-line, and Clarkson was denied on the follow up.

City made nine changes at the interval, with only the two trialists continuing.

And it took time for both sides to settle on a sodden pitch, caused by a heavy downpour during the half-time break.

City were finally level on 63 minutes when John Akinde's dogged play helped Lee Trundle tee-up Skuse in the box for a bundled finish.

Eremenko almost had City in front soon after with a driven shot which rattled back off the crossbar. The 39-cap Finland international, who lasted 82 minutes, played in central midfield for City's first half 4-3-3 formation, but switched to the left-wing in the second half where was 4-4-2 introduced.

Dean Gerken, on for Basso at half-time, did well to keep out low shots from Liam Hughes and Tony Ameobi in quick succession.

The game looked destined to end level until Plummer's intervention, collecting Kington's brilliant defence-splitting pass before stabbing home.

Basso (Gerken 46); Orr (Ribeiro 46), Papazacharias, Carey (J.Wilson 46), Fontaine (Artus 46); Johnson (Plummer 46), Eremenko (Jackson 82), Elliott (Skuse 46); Sproule (Akinde 46), Maynard (Trundle 46), Clarkson (Kington 46).
