Former City player Norman Hunter will end a 43-year wait by picking up a World Cup winners' medal today.

Hunter, who played for City between 1976 and 1979, was part of the England squad that beat West Germany 4-2 at Wembley in 1966.

However, prior to 1974, only players who started the final received a winners' medal but that will finally change today during a presentation at No. 10 Downing Street by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and FIFA's Sepp Blatter.

Gordon Brown said: "I am absolutely delighted to welcome Norman Hunter, Ron Springett and the other players to Downing Street today. It's absolutely right that we recognise their role in England's 1966 World Cup success - one of our finest sporting moments. They are real football heroes and have made this country proud.

"The 1966 World Cup engaged and inspired the whole country for generations, just as we hope to inspire a whole new generation with our bid to host the 2018 World Cup."

Hunter said: "I didn't think we would see it. It's always slightly rankled me, but I'm delighted we're going to get something."

Other players receiving a medal today are Peter Bonetti, Jimmy Greaves, Jimmy Armfield, John Connolly, Ron Springett, Gerry Byrne, Ron Flowers, Terry Paine, Ian Callaghan and George Eastham.
