1909 CUP FINAL REPLAYED

Posted on: Wed 25 Mar 2009

Louis Carey and Scott Murray model replica kits worn during City's only FA Cup final appearance* - as details are announced of a match being played to mark the centenary of the game.

City played Manchester United in front of 71,401 at Crystal Palace on 24th April 1909, losing 1-0 to a goal by Sandy Turnbull.

Bristol City Supporters Trust have joined forces with their counterparts from MUST (Manchester United Supporters Trust) to stage a re-enactment of the tie on the site of the original venue, now Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

The match will kick-off at 3.30pm - the same start time as the original fixture - on Friday, April 24th with both teams of fans wearing authentic replica-style kit.

As they do today, in 1909 both clubs wore red so they decided on an alternative strip for the final. Bristol City - in the days before their local rivals wore the same colour - turned out in royal blue shirts.

The game has received backing from the FA, who anticipate it will be the first of an annual event helping to reconnect supporters with the FA Cup.

And involvement from supporters of both clubs is encouraged, including the opportunity to play in the match.

Bristol City Supporters Trust (BCST) chairman Stuart Rogers says: "In 1909 Bristol City were very much on a par with Manchester United as a force in English football and the FA Cup final marked the peak of that magical era.

"We are proud to celebrate this centenary with our friends from Manchester as our club strives to compete at the highest level of English football in the present day."

FA chairman Lord Triesman states: "It is both heartening and reassuring to the FA to see that supporters still value the traditions of this wonderful competition.

"The FA is delighted to give our full support to the Bristol City Supporters Trust and the Manchester United Supporters Trust in their endeavours to mark so aptly the centennial anniversary of the clubs' first ever FA Cup final appearance."

Further information on the event - sponsored by Blackthorn - can be viewed at 1909replayed.org.
