ROOSTER IS CITY'S QUICKEST

Posted on: Mon 16 Feb 2009

Ivan Sproule had already been crowned 'Bristol City's quickest' before he raced more than 80 yards to seal victory over Southampton on Saturday.

Recent recruit Izzy Iriekpen challenged Ivan for his speed crown at the training ground on Friday, taking part in a 100m race.

But the former Scunthorpe and Swansea defender - for all his crowing in the build-up - just didn't have it in him to beat the Northern Irish wing-man.

Ivan told bcfc.co.uk: "It was organised by the gaffer, although our fitness guy Glen Schmidt tried to call a halt to it as it was so close to the game.

"Fair play to Izzy for stepping up and he was with me for the first 20 to 30 metres, but after that he was blown away. Now Scott Murray wants to be my agent and organise more races for me!

"I did plenty of athletics as a young boy before opting for football at the age of ten. They used to call me the rooster because of the way I ran."

"Ivan is the quickest player I've ever played with."

Of course Ivan put his speed to good use in stoppage time at the weekend to burst past the Southampton defence and slide the ball home into an empty Atyeo Stand goal.

Izzy quickly ran up to join in the celebrations, pointing at Ivan to advise the jubiliant home fans that "he's the quickest around".

The defender told bcfc.co.uk today: "Sprouley's the quickest but just by a little bit. I was disappointed to lose (the race), however, it was close.

"He's the quickest player I've ever played with."

Watch Ivan's goal on Bristol City World now as part of a 27-minute long extended highlights package.
