CITY FAN STEVE GOES FOR GLORY

Posted on: Fri 19 Dec 2008

City fan and darts player Steve Grubb is about to play the most important game of his life when he takes on World Champion Phil Taylor in the PDC World Championship tomorrow.

The match starts at around 10pm, and is live on Sky Sports One - and bcfc.co.uk caught up with Steve as he prepared to set off for London.

"Sadly I've got to miss the Burnley game," he told the club website. "I'll be practising non stop all day Saturday, but I will be listening to the match online."

Steve is a Bristol City World subscriber and has been watching the exclusive nine-dart challenge feature with a professional interest. It's fair to say that he wouldn't be quaking in his boots about taking on any of the participants.

He started playing competitively at the age of 13, and had reached County level by the age of 17. Now aged 40, Steve runs the Lamb Inn at Clandown near Radstock, when he's not travelling round the country appearing in PDC events.

When asked how he felt about playing 13 times World Champion Taylor, Steve responded bullishly: "I know he's the favourite, but I'm not going to let him intimidate me like he does with some people. Mind you, I'm 6'2" and nineteen stone, so he'd have a job.

"In the end, it's me against him. Darts is 40 per cent ability, 40 per cent bottle and 20 per cent mental strength, and I've got plenty of all those. I'm in there to win, make no mistake about it. I want to get through to the next round."

Steve has another reason for wanting to beat Taylor, who he's never faced before.

The City fan added: "He's a big Port Vale fan. He was here a few years ago when they nicked a one nil win, and he didn't stop going on about it for ages. Saturday night at ten, he'd better watch out, because I'm out for revenge."
