Gary Johnson insists Scott Murray has a future at Ashton Gate.

The City boss sanctioned a one-month loan move for the winger at Cheltenham Town today, but insists the deal is right for all parties.

And Gary gave the 34-year-old his firm backing about the future, in an exclusive bcfc.co.uk interview.

"We wouldn't have given Scott a new contract if we thought it was the end for him," Gary said. "We love him and the way he plays.

"He showed in the reserves the other day that he's still got that character and ability to score quality goals. The Championship is a bit different from the reserve league, but he needs to get his Championship legs.

"He will get the legs playing a few games for Cheltenham, and we get the recall option after the first month. If he's challenging when he comes back then he'll be ready.

"It's a positive for everyone all around. I've already said to Scotty, I want him at this football club for as long as I'm here."

Martin Allen took over the mantle at Whaddon Road today, replacing Keith Downing who departed after a 4-1 defeat at Hartlepool United on Friday.

"I'm disappointed for Keith," said Gary today. "I feel he did a fantastic job under the circumstances but the board have decided to make a change.

"They've brought in Martin Allen, who I know well too. As they are one of our local clubs then I'm always happy to help them out with players (on loan) and they always treat our lads right."

Gary actually interupted Allen's first Cheltenham press conference with a phonecall to seal the loan deal. See the footage here.
