John Akinde is determined to prove he can make the "massive" step up from non-league football to the Coca-Cola Championship.

The 19-year-old today penned a three-year contract at Ashton Gate, ending his three-year association with Blue Square Premier side Ebbsfleet United.

And, although he admits there is plenty of work to be done, John insists he will be able to cope with the demands of playing three divisions higher.

In his first interview as a City player, John told Bristol City World: "It's a massive jump, a massive step up, but I'm willing to work hard and get to grips with it pretty quickly.

"It's a dream because only a few years ago I was watching players playing in the Championship and now I'm a part of a Championship club.

"Bristol City is a very big club and there is a good set-up here. The players are quality and work hard with a fast tempo. I just wanted to become a part of the club.

"My aim is to break into the first team as quickly as possible, hopefully this season, and try and establish myself.

"I've been here a few days and I've been doing lots of work with the fitness team. The manager says I have to get my body prepared for Championship training and matches, and hopefully that won't take too long."

John - who watched City's 1-1 draw with QPR from the directors' box - admitted his ideal role is as a striker, despite playing for periods on the wing at Ebbsfleet.

He said of his own game: "I'll always work hard and hopefully score some goals."

The switch is transfer history as Ebbsfleet United are a fan-owned club - meaning their 20,000-plus members were able to vote on whether to accept City's transfer bid or turn it down and keep the forward at Stonebridge Road.

In the end a 82.3 per cent majority of 7,500 voters put the rubberstamp on the youngster's switch to Ashton Gate.

"It's been a different sort of transfer, that's for sure," grinned John, "but it's all been good and I'm happy to be here now."
