ADRIANO TAKES TOP AWARD

Posted on: Thu 08 May 2008

Adriano Basso has been named Player of the Year for 2007/08, with Marvin Elliott picking up the Young Player award.

Goalkeeper Adriano is the first Brazilian to ever win City's Player of the Year award, and collected his gong at this evening's awards night at Ashton Gate.

The 33-year-old kept 15 clean sheets during the season and produced numerous remarkable saves, many of which were played back on the big screens as the custodian collected his accolade.

But it was also the Brazilian's bubbly personality and positive spirit - galvanised by his 'Always Believe' mentality - that has seen Adriano become a real crowd favourite at Ashton Gate.

Adriano told bcfc.co.uk: "We don't achieve anything alone so I thank everybody who has the same mentality as me.

"We work hard to achieve goals and this season I have done well to help the team, my friends, the players who help me.

"I say thank you to God for giving me this opportunity, but I still had to make things happen. I'm delighted."

Marvin has been a revelation since joining City on a free transfer from Millwall in the summer and was a deserved winner of the Young Player award.

"I'm absolutely delighted, I just want to kick on from here," Marvin told bcfc.co.uk. "I'd like to thank God, the gaffer, the staff and every single player at this club. The fans as well. Everyone has made me feel at home."

Playing 48 times and scoring six goals, the Londoner has cemented his place in City's starting line-up during their push for promotion to the Premier League.

Darren Byfield collected the Top Goalscorer award for his eight strikes during the season to date.

And Ivy Haines, 105, was named Supporter of the Year, a gong voted for by the players themselves. The other nominees were Kate Masters, Sean Takle, Del Charles and Marie Day.

The final award, the Champagne Moment of the season, went to Jamie McCombe for his superb overhead kick goal in the 2-1 win over Hull City on March 1st 2008.
