CITY CLINCH COMBINATION HONOURS
City Reserves 6-1 Rovers Reserves
Ed Furniss reports from Ashton Gate
City clinched the Pontin's Holidays Combination Wales & West Division title with an emphatic win over local rivals Bristol Rovers at Ashton Gate.
In a match re-arranged from its original venue at the Memorial Stadium, Alan Walsh's side run riot, with Enoch Showunmi and Scott Murray scoring twice to ensure City finish top of the table with one game to play.
The victory completes a rare double for City's "second first team" - as Gary Johnson calls them - after beating Cheltenham Town 9-1 to lift the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup at the same venue just eight days ago.
The game got off to a dramatic start when Showunmi was upended in the box by Rovers skipper Alex Kite, son of former City and Rovers keeper Phil. The Nigerian striker dusted himself down and calmly rifled the spot-kick into the top left corner to put the home side one-up within the second minute.
Their lead lasted just five minutes, however, before Chris Weale gifted Rovers an equaliser - the former Yeovil keeper uncharacteristically allowing a low drive by Charlie Clough from outside the area to slip through his hands into the net.
Darren Byfield saved his colleague's blushes, however, by restoring the hosts' advantage in the 11th minute, drilling a shot past Mike Green from 18 yards out after a neat turn on the edge of the area.
The former Villa forward turned provider for City's third goal, teeing up Murray on the edge of the box from where the Scot used all of his experience to place a right-footed shot in off the right-hand post.
Showunmi made it 4-1 after 25 minutes when he chested down a long ball from Martin Slocombe in the area and had the relatively easy task of rolling the ball past Green.
City could have added to their score before half-time - Liam Fontaine saw a header well saved by Green before Tristan Plummer shot over the bar from 12 yards after some clever build-up play involving five City players.
The home side waited just five minutes to extend their lead in the second half, Slocombe's left-wing cross was parried by Green into the path of Ivan Sproule who finished on the rebound after his initial shot was saved.
Green helped keep the score down to a respectable level in the second half, making good saves from Murray and Christian Ribeiro - following a strong run from deep which took the Welsh under-21 international past three players - before Murray netted the goal of the game to complete the scoring in the 81st minute.
The City skipper picked up the ball from 25 yards out before beating Green all ends up with a beautifully placed chip.
Showunmi was denied a hat-trick by Green when one-on-one with the Rovers keeper two minutes from time, but by then the match and the destiny of the Combination title was beyond doubt.
