THE BEST YET - JEVO

Posted on: Wed 01 Aug 2007

Phil Jevons felt City's performance in the 1-0 win over Swindon Town was their best so far in pre-season.

After an unbeaten tour of Latvia, City went three games without a win back on UK soil before beating Swindon at the County Ground last night.

Phil - who turns 28 today - scored the only goal of the game on 77 minutes, making it two in as many games for the forward.

And he told Bristol City World: "I'm happy with the goals in the last two games and happy with how pre-season has gone for everybody really.

"We're finding our feet during pre-season and hopefully come the QPR game we'll all be firing on all cylinders.

"This was our best performance to date. We worked hard in training on our sharpness coming into this match and it was probably wasn't fair on Swindon because in each half the front six could really go for it.

"We kept the ball well and looked sharp. If we had tucked our chances away in the first half it could have been a different scoreline but things go like that in pre-season.

"It happens during the season too, sometimes you do score chances, sometimes you don't. You just have to make sure you keep getting in there."

The arrival of Lee Trundle from Swansea has added extra competition for places up front.

That's something Jevo relishes and he added: "These things happen when you step up a level. You can't expect to play 40-plus games in the Championship and be the star of the show every week.

"It's a tough league, we're at a big club and I'm sure everyone will play their part. It's a jostle for position to see who's in the forefront of the gaffer's mind for the opening day of the season.

"It would probably be boring if you were the only good striker at the club, with every looking at you all the time.

"Competition is good and the strikers we have at the club all have different attributes and qualities anyway. The gaffer's worked hard to build a squad like that.

"We're all in this together. We pat each other on the back when we do well and gee each other up when we don't. That's all part of being a squad member, not sulking when you're not in the team."
