Gary Johnson insisted there is still more to come from his players after watching them come back from behind to draw 2-2 against Yeovil.
City's manager delivered one of his infamous half-time talks after watching former striker Marcus Stewart poach two first-half goals for the Glovers.
And he was rewarded as new arrival Lee Trundle scored one and set another up for Phil Jevons to salvage a draw in today's home pre-season friendly.
Gary told Bristol City World: "You could say that Lee scoring was a story, as was Jevo scoring against his former club - but I don't really look for stories in pre-season game, you look to see how the team as a whole respond.
"Yeovil made it competitive as we knew they would - that's why we arranged this game - and some clever play by them led to goals in the first half.
"We didn't defend very well as a team and let their wide men have too much play. In the second half we looked more solid mentally.
"It would have been the first time some of the new lads would have heard me let loose at half-time but I thought it was important we kept our winning mentality.
"To be fair they responded by getting a couple of goals back. So in the end you could say we lost the first half 2-0 and won the second 2-0.
"In summary the bad news is we are still looking a jaded, but the good news is there is a bit to come.
"As long as we are peaking by August 11th that is what matters and I would ask everyone to trust us we will get the players ready in time."
Gary added that Ivan Sproule - who came off after only 17 minutes off his home debut with a dead leg - and Louis Carey, who was suffering with a sore shoulder, were not major injury concerns.
