Cardiff City 1-0 Bristol City
Adam Baker reports from Cardiff City Stadium

Bradley Orr's unfortunate own goal saw City exit the FA Cup at the hands of Cardiff City in this third round replay.

Just 6,731 fans watched the game inside the Bluebirds' 27,000 all-seater stadium, and the match lived up to the lacklustre atmosphere.

Chances were few and far between in the first half and the game looked to be heading towards extra time and possibly penalties going into the last 15 minutes.

But then Michael Chopra's shot across goal bounced back off the post and hit Orr's knee for the decisive moment. Cardiff had further chances to seal victory, but the unlucky Orr own goal was all that separated the two sides.

In a quiet start Ross McCormack twice whistled shot a couple of yards wide of the City goal.

Evander Sno wrestles away from Chris Burke and Joe Ledley

Peter Whittingham was the first to test Dean Gerken with a swerving shot from 30 yards which the City keeper did well to parry away to safety.

At the other end Bradley Orr's floated pass into the box found an unmarked Jamie McAllister. The makeshift left-winger controlled the ball perfectly in the box to evade keeper David Marshall, but was unable to convert with his less-favourable right foot from an acute angle.

McCormack warmed the gloves of Gerken on the half hour, before the introduction of Chopra for Aaron Wildig, who had suffered a groin injury.

Almost immediately Chopra nicked in between Louis Carey and Liam Fontaine but couldn't fire beyond Gerken, who saved with his legs.

Then, with four minutes of the first half remaining, Bothroyd played the ball into Chopra's feet. The Cardiff top scorer flicked the ball up for himself to skip by Carey and lashed a first-time volley inches over the top.

Maynard had a chance to shoot for goal moments later as he battled beyond a couple of Cardiff players. However, the City striker was rushed into a shot by defenders closing him down and with his left boot fired over the top.

Jamie McAllister couldn't convert after rounding David Marshall

Cardiff survived a penalty claim eleven minutes after the break when Sproule seemed to be tripped by McCormack when the two jostled in the box.

Maynard was thwarted by Marshall when Cole Skuse hooked the ball into the middle. The Cardiff keeper launched the ball up the other end for Bothroyd to chase. The big striker got to the ball first, beating and rounding Gerken but watched the ball run away from him and out of play.

With the hour up, Maynard and Sno were withdrawn, replaced by Alvaro Saborio and John Akinde. With Sno previously operating in the hole in a 4-4-1-1 formation, the changes saw City revert to 4-4-2.

On 68 minutes McCormack got to the bye-line and clipped the ball across goal for Bothroyd, who had taken up position centrally ten yards out. The striker got his head to the ball but could only direct his effort inches over the top.

Moments later Chopra went on a mazy run, beating two City defenders before running the ball too far into the arms of Gerken.

A goal seemed on the cards and it duly arrived with 15 minutes to go. Gerrard's long ball forward was chased by Chopra, who was afforded a free run at goal. The striker fired across and hit the foot of the far post, and as the ball rebounded out Orr inadvertently into the net when trying to clear.

Now Cardiff were lifted and could easily have been two or three up seconds later. Carey did well to save Gerken's blushes when he was caught out of position by Chopra.

Then McCormack let fly from 35 yards and rattled the crossbar with a stinging drive. Seconds later Gerken did well to save with his legs when Chopra was through once more.

Chopra missed a great chance to seal victory on 90 minutes when he hooked over Darcy Blake's cross from just a couple of yards out. He also wasted a one-on-one opportunity when he allowed the ball to run away from him into Gerken's arms.

But City could muster nothing at the other end and slipped out of the competition, leaving the Bluebirds to entertain Leicester in round four.
