Bristol City 0-2 Carlisle United
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate

City suffered the misery of a Carling Cup second round exit at the hands of League One side Carlisle United at Ashton Gate.

Second-half goals from Scott Dobie and Gary Madine booked Carlisle a deserved place in the hat for Saturday's third round draw.

For City - who made five changes, many enforced - they must now dust themselves down for Saturday's crunch clash with Middlesbrough at Ashton Gate.

Carlisle had much the better of the first half despite their lengthy trip to Ashton Gate on the day of the game.

John Akinde sent an early header over the top from Danny Haynes' cross, but after that it was the Cumbrians who took charge.

On 19 minutes Paul Thirwell's cross from the left-wing presented David Raven with a glorious chance to open the scoring but he finished like a defender would by spooning the ball over the top.

Soon after Tom Taiwo was given too much time and space in the box only to lash his left-footed effort horribly wide of the mark.

Haynes managed to break clear of the Carlisle defence on 26 minutes but drifted too wide and Danny Livesey was able to scramble back and make a sliding challenge before the City striker could pull the trigger.

Kevan Hurst and Joe Anyinsah failed to find the target from long-range attempts, but Taiwo went close three minutes before half-time.

As Marvin Elliott and Anyinsah battled for the ball on the ground, the ball bounced out loose to Taiwo who was free on the edge of the box. The Carlisle midfielder curled the ball towards the right corner of Dean Gerken's goal superbly with his left foot but could only watch as it rebounded away off the post.

City responded to a vapid first-half display by replacing Jamie McAllister at half-time with attack-minded Ivan Sproule, as well as switching to a 4-4-2 formation.

But Carlisle continued the second 45 as they ended the first. Anyinsah, from all of 35 yards, unleashed a venomous shot which flashed inches over the top with Gerken scrambling back.

With the hour-mark approaching the League One side deservedly took the lead as Matty Robson skipped by Ribeiro down the left and crossed for Dobie to convert at the front post with a side-footed finish.

City responded by bringing on Jamie McCombe as a makeshift forward, and immediately he shot wide from Akinde's cross.

But City's improvement was brief, and Carlisle wrapped up the win with 13 minutes to go. Anyinsah waltzed unchallenged into the box and cut the ball back to Madine for a simple finish past Gerken.

City had little left in the tank to respond and were unable to create any more chances despite four minutes of added on time.
