Brentford 0-1 Bristol City
Adam Baker reports from Griffin Park
Ten-man City booked their place in the second round of the Carling Cup thanks to Nicky Maynard's second-half goal at Brentford.
Danny Haynes had only just been ordered from the field for a second bookable offence when Maynard pounced inside the box for the winner.
City had survived a difficult first half against last term's League Two champions, but Maynard's clinical finish on 58 minutes secured a place for the Championship side in the second round draw.
City had a glorious chance to snatch a fifth-minute lead when Lee Johnson's quickly-taken free kick picked out Liam Fontaine clear in the box. The defender controlled the ball well on his chest but was unable stab the ball past Brentford keeper Nikki Bull, who saved well with his body.

Steve Kabba's terrible miss delights the City supporters |
After that it was all Brentford as Myles Weston tested Dean Gerken with a low shot, and then Steve Kabba wasted a glorious chance on 11 minutes.
A quick counter saw the former Sheffield United midfielder skip past Fontaine and run half the length of the pitch towards the visiting goal. Kabba did well to round Gerken but then slipped at the vital moment and sent his shot high into the stand behind the goal.
Bull tipped Bradley Orr's swerving shot over the top in a rare break forward by City, while Kevin O'Connor and Weston went close at the other end.
Gerken was made to work by Sam Saunders' angled shot, before two successive corners picked out the head of an unmarked Mark Phillips inside the box - but the defender missed the target both times.
Just before half-time Nicky Maynard raced past two Brentford defenders into the box but just as he was ready to pull the trigger, Ryan Dickson slid in with a goal-saving tackle.

Danny Haynes is dismissed early into the second half |
City's first half frustration was displayed when Haynes entered the referee's notebook for showing dissent a minute before the break.
And it came back to haunt the striker, who collected a second yellow card and subsequent red just seven minutes after the restart.
City had started the second 45 well with an angled drive from Andre Blackman stinging the hands of Bull.
But Haynes' dismissal came just seconds later as the striker left a boot in on Dickson and sent the defender tumbling inside the centre circle. City's players tried to reason with official Phil Crossley, but the decision had already been made to order Haynes from the field.
It could have been a turning point in the home side's favour, but if anything it sparked City into life with Maynard opening the scoring just five minutes later.

Nicky Maynard celebrates scoring the winning goal |
Orr's cross from the right was only palmed out by Bull as far as Fontaine. The defender hooked the ball over his head back towards the danger area and Maynard was on hand six yards out to head in for 1-0.
Brentford needed to fight their way back into the game but Saunders twice found Gerken up to the task. The City keeper tipped Saunders' 25-yard free kick around the post, and then moments later parried away an angled piledriver.
City survived an even bigger scare with eight minutes to go as Wood crossed from the right and Weston headed powerfully against the bar - twice - as the ball looped down on to the bar for a second time before dropping behind.
"We only need ten men" was the shout by City's supporters as their team survived four minutes of added on time at Griffin Park.
