Bristol City 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate

City and Nottingham Forest played out an entertaining and feisty 1-1 draw at Ashton Gate.

A deflected Liam Fontaine goal was cancelled out by Guy Moussi's stunner in an even first half.

But that was all overshadowed by a late injury to goalkeeper Dean Gerken, caused by dreadful sliding lunge from Nathan Tyson. With City having used all three substitutes, Stefan Maierhofer was summoned to don the gloves and take over between the sticks.

Fortunately the Austrian international wasn't tested in stoppage time, as the two sides shared a point at Ashton Gate for the fifth successive match-up.

City are making a habit of netting early goals at Ashton Gate these days and it took the home side just two minutes and two seconds to go ahead in this one.

Paul Hartley's corner kick was headed out by Dele Adebola but straight to Bradley Orr. The Liverpudlian took aim unchallenged from 25 yards and watched his low drive take a narrow deflection off Fontaine to flick the ball further into the corner of the net with his head and beat Forest keeper Lee Camp.

George Boyd headed over for Forest, desperate for quick response, whilst Orr's dangerous ball into the box on ten minutes was nodded out straight to Cole Skuse by Wes Morgan. The midfielder advanced towards the edge of the area and sent a curling left-foot shot just wide of the mark.

In driving rain both keepers were struggling as Camp was fortunate his weak clearance just bounced clear of an unmarked Nicky Maynard. At the other end Louis Carey was on hand when Dean Gerken spilt Chris Cohen's dipping cross.

Forest's equaliser arrived on 29 minutes out of the blue. Moussi was afforded far too much time and space to let fly from all of 30 yards. He didn't disappoint and arrowed a superb drive high into the top corner to restore parity.

Determined to join in with a long-range effort of his own, Maynard took aim after receiving a short free kick from Hartley but the City top scorer's radar was off as the ball flashed over the top.

Fontaine - boosted by his early, albeit fortunate strike - attempted an audacious overhead kick six minutes before the break. The defender showed superb technical ability and Camp stretched every muscle in his body to tip the dipping effort over the crossbar.

City began the second half brightly and the defensive duo of Morgan and James Chambers managed to block off Maynard's goal-bound run soon after the restart.

Fontaine continued as a goal threat and was unfortunate when he tried to coolly lob his marker inside the box to find room for a shot.

As the game ebbed and flowed, City certainly enjoyed the better of the chances.

Haynes robbed Kelvin Wilson on the edge of his own box and advanced goalwards. From an acute angle, Camp did well to tighten the angle even further and Haynes could only chip against the side-netting.

Good play down the left flank from Campbell-Ryce led to a good opportunity for Elliott on the edge of the box but his rasping drive flew over.

Stefan Maierhofer ended up in goal after Dean Gerken's injury

Forest shuffled their forwards with Adebola and Boyd replaced by Joe Garner and Nathan Tyson. And Tyson had a glorious chance to fire the visitors in front with his first touch. Skuse was robbed by James Perch and his thought ball offered Tyson a clean run at Gerken, however, the City keeper was up to the task with a smart save at point blank range. City responded by replacing Skuse with Lee Johnson.

Gerken was called into action again with ten minutes left and produced an even better save. Chambers' right-wing cross was aimed perfectly towards Garner in the middle and his downward header looked destined to find the net. Gerken had other ideas, almost hooking the ball away from his goal-line before pouncing before any rebound attempt from the Forest forward.

Haynes saw a ten-yard shot deflected behind and from the following corner Fontaine guided a headed attempt narrowly wide.

Keith Millen gambled with eight minutes left by throwing on Maierhofer and David Clarkson for Maynard and Haynes - and in unforeseen circumstances it backfired for the hosts.

Tyson's awful sliding challenge on Gerken when charging down a clearance left the City keeper flat out and needing serious treatment. With City having made all three substitutions and Gerken being stretchered off, Austrian international forward Maierhofer donned the gloves and the goalkeeper's jersey. Fury from the stands greeted referee Phil Crossley's decision to only caution Tyson rather than show a red card.

But the stand-in stopper had nothing to do in the end as two more Forest players entered the book in stoppage time for further poor tackles.
