Bristol City 5-3 Barnsley
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate

Danny Haynes and Nicky Maynard both grabbed braces as City overcome a determined Barnsley side 5-3 at Ashton Gate - giving Keith Millen his first win as caretaker manager.

Haynes saw his second-minute header cancelled out moments later by Hugo Collace. The visitors then moved in front midway through the first half when Daniel Bogdanovic rounded off a clever free kick routine.

But Maynard headed two goals either side of half-time to put City back in the driving seat, and he then teed up Haynes for a smart finish inside the box.

Paul Hartley rounded off a superb second-half display with a fifth City goal from the penalty spot. Substitute Andy Gray's consolation failed to take any shine off a fantastic result for the home team.

Millen had planned to make just one change with Liam Fontaine shaking off an ankle injury to replace Jamie McAllister, who had been ruled out due to a calf problem.

However, Lewin Nyatanga was forced to pull out with a injury in the warm-up, meaning Jamal Campbell-Ryce was promoted from the bench to the starting eleven against his former club.

The opening three minutes were frantic and open - resulting in two goals.

Inside 69 seconds City were in front as Hartley fed Marvin Elliott and he teased a cross towards the penalty spot. Haynes rose above his marker and had lots to do, but by working his neck muscles to their maximum his guided header beat Luke Steele inside his left upright.

However, with a minute and a half the visitors were level. A hopeful ball in from Luke Potter on the left flank wasn't dealt with by the home defence. That allowed Colace to steal in unmarked and finish first time with a firm right-footed shot low past Dean Gerken.

Gerken saved a long range Jon Macken shot at the second attempt, whilst Steele fumbled a driven Nicky Maynard shot behind at the other end.

Then, after a sustained period of Barnsley pressure, a free kick was awarded to the Tykes down the right wing when Campbell-Ryce tugged on Filipe Teixeira's shirt. Working a move from the training ground, Hassell's low pass into the box found the clever run of Bogdanovic and he smashed a low shot beyond Gerken inside his near post.

Hugo Colace fires in a quick-fire equaliser for Barnsley

Just when City looked to be heading in at the break behind, Campbell-Ryce turned on the style and showed trickery to skip past Hassell. The former Barnsley man looked to have run out of form but managed to wrap his left foot around the ball and centre it from the bye-line. It worked out perfectly for Maynard in the middle as he wrestled away from Stephen Foster and flicked the ball inside the far post with a delicate header.

City should have been ahead within two minutes of the restart when Paul Hartley burst into the penalty area and sent a dangerous cross along the six-yard box. The ball was begging to be put in but nobody in a red shirt was in position to send it in. On the follow up Bradley Orr crossed against Foster but appeals for a penalty were quickly waved away.

On 56 minutes City were rewarded for their positive start to the second half when a dangerous cross in from Fontaine found its way to the back post. Orr was there to hook the ball back across goal and Maynard stole in unchallenged at the back post to head in from a couple of yards out.

Daniel Bogdanovic celebrates his goal but City hit back well

Maynard could have sealed his hat-trick on the hour when Haynes broke free of the offside trap and crossed towards the penalty spot. Maynard was in the perfect position to convert but managed to get the ball stuck under his feet and Steele was there to pounce on the loose ball.

It mattered little though as City were soon 4-2 to the good. Good link up play saw Haynes play a neat one-two with Maynard before beating Ryan Shotton inside the box. Haynes steadied himself just eight yards out and calmly placed his shot under Steele to gift City some daylight at last.

City's fifth goal arrived on 76 minutes and it was gifted to them by a poor challenge by Shotton on Maynard in the penalty area. Haynes was desperate to take the resultant spot-kick to seal his hat-trick but Hartley wanted to make the game safe and with a confident strike he sent Steele the wrong way from 12 yards for 5-2.

City 5-3 Barnsley
Danny Haynes netted twice in the rout at Ashton Gate

Barnsley gave themselves some hope when Colace's cross was nodding down and under Gerken by substitute Gray for 5-3 with nine minutes left.

It proved no more than a consolation strike though and Maynard almost netted his hat-trick goal late on only for Steele to save close to his body.
