Bristol City 1-1 Peterborough United
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate

City sufffered late disappointment as two more home points went begging when Peterborough snatched a last-gasp equaliser through George Boyd.

Cole Skuse's superb solo goal looked to have put City on the road to three points at Ashton Gate, but the Posh powered on in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts at the death.

A flicked header from Boyd with just 16 seconds of normal time remaining silenced Ashton Gate, except for the 400 or so travelling fans in the East End.

Nicky Maynard could and probably should have bagged a fifth-minute opener as Evander Sno chested the ball down to him from Bradley Orr's cross. From all of eight yards City's leading scorer lashed his shot over the top to the amazement of everyone inside Ashton Gate.

George Boyd sent an acute-angled shot wide of the post moments later, and then sent team-mate Craig Mackail-Smith clean through on goal via a swift counter. However, Mackail-Smith hadn't accounted for the onrushing Dean Gerken who pounced to make a superb save with his body.

Peterborough keeper Joe Lewis spilled Jamie McAllister's free kick on nine minutes but recovered in time to block away Lewin Nyatanga's hooked attempt.

After a quiet period Peterborough were the next to threaten as Danny Rose was picked out on the edge of the box only to lash his shot high, wide and handsome.

Toumani Diagouranga went closer still for the visitors on 26 minutes with a dipping shot from 25 yards that Gerken was able to watch drop inches over his own crossbar.

The opener arrived on 31 minutes and it arrived out of nothing. Skuse wriggled his way past two Posh players with ease and then beyond one more before finishing like a striker under the body of Lewis from 12 yards.

City could have secured a quickfire second almost immediately from the restart as Maynard advanced on to Sno's pass through on goal but Lewis saved at his feet as he tried to round him.

Cole Skuse celebrates his first goal of the season

Peterborough came out much sharper for the second half and saw long range efforts from Chris Whelpdale and Tommy Rowe go close.

City had Gerken to thank for maintaining their slender advantage on th hour as Boyd's run and cross presented Mackail-Smith with what seemed a simple finish from close range. Gerken had other ideas, however, with a superb one-handed save at point-blank range.

Another dangerous McAllister inswinging free kick was controlled brilliantly by Marvin Elliott only to be stabbed inches wide by the midfielder on 67 minutes.

And moments later Lee Johnson robbed Gabriel Zakuani on the edge of his own box and sent a shot floating towards the top corner, only for Lewis to tip the ball over with his fingertips.

City continuted on the front foot and Maynard was just unable to connect with Orr's cross with time ticking away, after good play down the right from Ajax loanee Sno.

Substitute Danny Haynes fired over the top and then, soon after, was denied a close range finish by a superb sliding tackle from Russell Martin inside the six-yard box.

Just when City looked to be home and dry, Peterborough found an equaliser out of nothing.

Substitute Martin clipped the ball in from the right flank and Boyd's glancing header sent the ball looping over Gerken's outstretched arm and in off the far post.
