Bristol City 1-1 Scunthorpe United
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate

City were denied victory over Scunthorpe with a last-gasp Grant McCann equaliser.

The home side's 100 per cent league record at Ashton Gate looked to be continuing when Alvaro Saborio's close range in the 50th minute had them in front.

But McCann pounced in the box during stoppage time to claim a point for the Iron.

Scunthorpe came to Ashton Gate as one of the division's in-form teams and an early shot from Martyn Woolford forced Adriano Basso into a diving save.

At the other end the returning Nicky Maynard made Scunthorpe keeper Joe Murphy work, sending a low shot that had to be pushed around the post with both hands.

The two teams traded disallowed goals in the space of four minutes soon after. Evander Sno's shot from just inside the box seemed destined for the far corner, but when Alvaro Saborio poked the ball in he was flagged offside.

Jonathon Forte was denied at the other end, also flagged offside as he finished off Sam Togwell's cross from close range.

Woolford went close in the 15th minute as he rose highest in the box ten yards out to connect with Marcus Williams' free kick but Basso denied the midfielder with a superb two-handed save.

After the early flurry of chances, opportunities dried up. Sno lashed a shot over the top in the 37th minute and Hayes hooked a low grass-cutter wide in front of the Atyeo Stand in first-half stoppage time.

The second half started brightly with Josh Wright breaking clear for Scunthorpe before shooting straight into the arms of Basso.

Almost immediately City raced down the other end and Saborio teed up Maynard for a run at goal. However, City's leading scorer was denied a shot at goal by Jones' sliding challenge.

It mattered little as the opener duly arrived on 50 minutes as Williams' clearance hit one of his own team-mates inside the penalty area. The ball dropped kindly for Saborio who forced a smart save from Murphy initially before stabbing in the rebound.

A second goal almost followed eight minutes later as Jamie McAllister's deceptive low free kick was flicked on by Saborio and Maynard just failed to connect and convert inside the six yard bow.

Two penalty appeals for City in quick succession went by without an award from referee Danny McDermid with 20 minutes left.

Then Basso made a smart clutching save to keep out Hayes' angled shot from the edge of the box.

With three substitutions already made by Scunthorpe, one of their replacements Gary Hooper limped off with a muscle complaint leaving the visitors with ten men for the final 11 minutes of the game.

Sno tested Murphy from distance, and then in the final minute of normal time McCann whipped a 25-yard free kick wide of the mark.

That looked to have been the last chance, but in stoppage time a free kick into the box wasn't dealt with and McCann pounced to hook in the leveller.
