Burnley 4-0 Bristol City
Adam Baker reports from Turf Moor
City finished the 2008/09 season in tenth position after losing out by four goals to nil at Burnley.
The Clarets booked their place in the play-offs thanks to two penalty kicks from Graham Alexander, plus efforts from Wade Elliott and Joey Gudjonsson.
City offered little at the other end, and also saw Nicky Maynard limp off with a leg injury.
Manager Gary Johnson had warned his players about an early onslaught from Burnley - and that's exactly how it panned out.
Early headed chances for Clarke Carlisle and Chris McCann, both from set-pieces, were well saved by Adriano Basso.
And after good play from winger Chris Eagles on five minutes, McCann shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.
Moments later Eagles went closer still himself, latching on to Wade Elliott's pass and volleying a shot against the crossbar.
Lee Johnson sent City's first chance across goal, just evading the lunge of Maynard in the middle.
Robbie Blake missed his kick in front of goal and Steven Caldwell headed straight at Basso as the home charge continued.
Then, on 36 minutes, Dele Adebola raced clear down the left and crossed for Maynard, who couldn't quite connect six yards out.
Burnley deserved a goal for their first-half efforts and it duly arrived on 42 minutes, after Jamie McAllister was adjudged to have pushed Wade Elliott in the box. Alexander stepped up confidently to dispatch the penalty high into the top corner - his eighth successful spot-kick of the season.
Burnley's lead was doubled almost immediately after the restart, a half-cleared corner being driven through a crowd of bodies and under Basso by Wade Elliott.
City returned for the second half a lot earlier than their hosts, with assistant boss Keith Millen warming up the team in the centre circle.
The chances were few and far between after the restart, with Wade Elliott testing Basso through a low shot.
At the other end a quickly-taken Bradley Orr free kick picked out Adebola in the middle but his header flashed wide of the far post.
By now Maynard had limped off following a crunching tackle with Carlisle, Gavin Williams replacing him. At the same time Ivan Sproule came on for Michael McIndoe.
Just when the game looked to be dying out, a floated ball into the box was handled by Orr. Alexander stepped up confidently once more and dispatched the spot-kick to the other side of Basso this time.
Gudjonsson rubbed salt in the City wounds four minutes from time, pouncing to slot in the rebound after Basso had kept out Eagles' low shot.
