Bristol City 1-2 Plymouth Argyle
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate

Rory Fallon's brace earned Plymouth Argyle a shock 2-1 win over Championship leaders City at Ashton Gate.

Fallon found the net either side of half-time to put the visitors in dream land, and despite a successful Lee Trundle penalty, they held on for all three points.

City spent much of the second half piling on the pressure, but they couldn't find a much-needed leveller at the death.

The game began in typical derby fashion - fast and furious with some tasty tackles on a wet pitch.

Russell Anderson was alert to block a Darren Byfield shot early on and then moments later the striker went to ground under pressure in the box, only for referee Tony Bates to wave away appeals from the home team.

Plymouth responded with Gary Teale finding Jermaine Easter free in the box, but the forward missed his kick when he looked certain to test Adriano Basso.

Another penalty claim was turned down for the hosts on ten minutes when Fallon seemed to block Dele Adebola's goalbound effort with an outstretched arm.

Back at the other Peter Halmosi tested Basso for the first time when, from 30 yards, he sent a low shot skidding across the turf and safely into the Brazilian's arms.

There was a major let-off for City on 18 minutes when Halmosi's corner kick picked out Fallon completely unmarked in the middle. The former Swindon striker was no further than six yards out and relief swept round the stadium as he misguided his header to miss the target completely.

The early excitement soon died down as the weather took its toll on the match. Players were misjudging the weight of passes on a slick pitch, with mistakes aplenty from both teams.

Then, on 33 minutes, City launched a pitch-long counter through Basso to McIndoe, into Adebola, who in turn fed strike partner Byfield in the box. Byfield took aim but found Rab Douglas up to the task with a terrific point-blank range parried stop.

Byfield was alert again moments later to hang a leg out and stab Bradley Orr's right-wing across just over the bar.

Just as the half-time whistle was about to sound, Plymouth stole in front. Teale's cross from the right skipped across the face of goal and Fallon guided the ball beyond Basso with a bobbling low finish.

The Pilgrims had Wotton to thank after the experienced midfielder cleared an Elliott header off his own goal-line following McIndoe's corner.

At the other end Basso did well to parry away Halmosi's low drive, and Liam Fontaine was on hand to put the rebound behind to safety.

But from the resultant corner Plymouth had their second goal. Teale corner was headed back across goal by Paul Connolly and Fallon turned the ball home from a couple of yards out.

Nick Carle tested Douglas and Byfield had a shot deflected wide as City went in search of a lifeline. By now Tamas Vasko and Trundle had been introduced to the attack.

The lifeline finally came on 74 minutes after Easter was adjudged to have handled in the box blocking a McIndoe free kick. Trundle stepped up and coolly sent Douglas the wrong way for 1-2.

The final quarter-of-an-hour saw City throw the proverbial kitchen sink at their opponents. Trundle, Vasko and McAllister all fired wide of the mark.

City had six minutes of added time to try and find a late, late leveller, but the Pilgrims held firm for a famous win at Ashton Gate.
