A FRESH START IN THE SUMMER

Posted on: Fri 23 Apr 2010

Read City captain Louis Carey's exclusive website blog, only on bcfc.co.uk.

It's the final home game of the season tomorrow and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their terrific support this year.

It's disappointing to go into the last match at Ashton Gate of 2009/10 without anything to play for, but ultimately we want to end the campaign on a high in preparation for the next one.

Last season we finished in tenth position and we still have the chance to finish higher than that this term.

If we can do that then it will bring in good sums of money for the club, and at the same time making us an exciting prospect for any potential new players who would want to join a top ten Championship club.

That decision now rests with the new manager Steve Coppell, who was appointed yesterday.

I'd never met the new gaffer before yesterday but his reputation clearly goes ahead of him along with his CV.

He's a former England international and has a fantastic record as a manager. We all remember what he did for Reading when he took them into the Premier League with a record points tally, and then took them to their highest-ever finish in the top flight.

If he can replicate that sort of performance here at Ashton Gate then everyone will be delighted.

He also has a superb track record of signing strikers, and he's able to improve players - which I hope he can do for me and the rest of the lads during his time with the club.

Of course, Keith Millen remains in charge for the remaining two games of this season, but we're all looking forward to getting involved with the new gaffer throughout the summer and moving towards the new campaign in August.

Everyone was disappointed to see our six-match unbeaten run under Milly come to an end last weekend at Scunthorpe United.

We were disappointed with the soft way in which the goals were conceded and the lack of chances we created at the other end.

Before that it had all been going so well for us, including the 1-0 victory over our South Wales rivals the last time out at Ashton Gate.

Milly has certainly put his stamp on things since the previous manager's departure in March, and I think that has showed in our performances. I'm personally very pleased that Milly will be staying at Ashton Gate as part of the new management team.

Hopefully we can finish our home campaign with victory tomorrow, and myself and the players will be going around the four stands to thank you for your support at the end of the game.

We can only do that with the co-operation of everyone inside Ashton Gate on the basis that no-one encroaches on to the pitch at the final whistle. Please adhere to the public address system and that will allow us to take part in this end-of-season tradition.

In the meantime, if you aren't going to Blackpool, then I hope you enjoy your summer and I think everyone is looking forward to the new season and a fresh approach when we return in August.
