MATCH PREVIEW: SCUNTHORPE AWAY

Posted on: Fri 16 Apr 2010

Read Adam Baker's big match preview blog, only on bcfc.co.uk.

OPPOSITION

Scunthorpe United entertain City at Glanford Park with their Championship lives still in danger. Scunthorpe went up as champions the same season City joined the Championship ranks - but while City booked a trip to Wembley for the play-off, the Lincolnshire outfit suffered an immediate return to League One. They returned this term with a play-off final victory over Millwall last May. Scunthorpe boast players with Championship experience from their first time around, including goalkeeper Joe Murphy and midfielder Matthew Sparrow. The Iron have a tendency to find key strikers, with Billy Sharp, Andy Keogh and Martin Paterson in recent campaigns - now it's the turn of Gary Hooper, who has 14 goals in all competitions to his name.

MANAGER

They say goalkeepers never make good managers but Nigel Adkins will surely disagree. The man from Birkenhead was a stopper for Tranmere Rovers and Wigan Athletic before ending his career at Bangor City - where he later became boss. He took up a role as physio at Scunthorpe but was promoted to caretaker manager in 2006, and then took them to the League One title that same season - leading supporters to sing "Who needs Mourinho, we've got our physio!" on the terraces. The Sun newspaper once labelled him 'Emergency Manager of the Year'. When Scunthorpe dropped back into League One, the Iron board stuck with their one-time physio and he duly paid them back with a Wembley win earlier this year to gain a second promotion to the Championship under his leadership.
