OPPOSITION
The league leaders look destined to return to the top flight at the first time of asking. Newcastle's squad is packed full of quality players, many of whom they have kept from their Premier League side. Stars Nicky Butt, Alan Smith and Steven Taylor - to name just three - the Magpies have a squad to trouble any side in the Championship. Ryan Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini are strong at the back, whilst promising youngsters Nile Ranger and Andy Carroll have been shining up front.
MANAGER
Chris Hughton became manager earlier this season following a successful third spell in caretaker charge of Newcastle United in two seasons. He first took charge in September 2008 after Kevin Keegan's departure before being replaced by Joe Kinnear soon after. When Kinnear fell ill ahead of a game with West Brom in February, Hughton found himself at the helm for a second time, as Kinnear was required to undergo heart surgery. After a short time in charge - assisted by Chris Calderwood - Hughton made way for the return of Alan Shearer to St James' Park. The Magpies hero couldn't save his favourite club from the drop in May, however, as he guided them to just one win under his leadership. Uncertainty around the club in the summer led to no permanent appointment of a manager - and once again Hughton took the reigns for their journey into the Championship. But a superb start to the season led the Magpies board appointing him full time.
