City Under-23s suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of their Southampton counterparts in the PL2 Cup at Twerton Park.
- Under-23s edged out by Saints
- Seager and Barnes on target for the South Coast outfit
- City’s next PL2 Cup group match is at Swansea City
Looking to bounce back from their loss against group opponents Newcastle United last time out, the development side found themselves trailing against a strong Saints side inside the opening five minutes.
Ryan Seager fired the visitors into the lead when he latched on to a loose ball and released a thunderous strike beyond the helpless Jojo Wollacott.
Jamie McAllister’s side responded brightly and having had a penalty appeal waved away, Freddie Hinds showed quick feet to work space and strike, but Harry Lewis was equal to his effort.
Southampton mounted considerable pressure on the hosts soon after the restart. Olufela Olomola teed up Callum Slattery, but he blazed an effort high and wide, with Olomola driving a strike inches wide of the near post moments later.
The visitors doubled their tally in the 65th minute. Ryan Seager motored forward, tricked his way through a challenge before meeting Marcus Barnes’ darting run, who calmly slotted under Wollacott.
Hinds went close to scoring a late consolation goal, but struck George Dowling’s cross wide of Lewis’ far post.
City’s next PL2 Cup group match is away at Swansea City on Thursday, February 23rd, before the Swans visit Ashton Gate on Thursday, March 9th to complete the round-robin format.
